About us

The Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), then called Davao Medical Center, is the largest government hospital in the country run by the Department of Health (DOH) with a 1,500-bed capacity and fully subsidized medical and surgical facilities by the national and local government. It serves as a referral and reference medical center to nearby and far-flung primary and tertiary healthcare facilities not only in Davao Region but the whole of Mindanao.

SPMC started to manage neurosurgical cases in the mid 1980s. In 1998, it opened a specialized neurosurgery ward and intensive care unit with four (4) consultants providing charity services. In 2014, the initiatives for formal neurosurgical training program was developed, forming an agreement with the University of the East Neurosurgical Training Program as the latter’s participating hospital. In 2017, the capabilities for provision of general neurosurgical training was further enhanced by patient volume, case variability, facilities, equipment, healthcare personnel, and administrative support. Thus, the vision and mission of SPMC Neurosurgical Residency Training Program was established. On July 15, 2024 the  SPMC Neurosurgical Training Program was officially recognized and accredited by the Philippine Board of Neurological Surgery as an independent training program. This strengthens our vision of rendering accessible, affordable, quality,  and appropriate neurosurgical care to the people of Mindanao.
